The Douglas Adams series, The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, includes two interesting comments about power, as embodied in the person of the Galactic President. These can be summarized briefly as "No one who wants to be President should be allowed to do the job," and "the President's job is not to wield power, but to distract attention from it."
Dave shows what might possibly happen if these two maxims were ever brought into play, contrasting a regular Joe, Dave, an unassuming owner of an employment agency, with those in presidential circles. The president, his chief of staff, and wife all illustrate the convenience of politics, personal agendas and a blatant disregard for ethics.
Against this unlikely background, Dave learns to use the system, earns respect, and romance develops, all without losing his ingrained good nature and respect for the people - who are after all what made America great.
At the end (I love the closing sequence) you are left with a feeling that it might just be possible for a decent person to get into power, and an unrealistic longing to see that happen.
