It's been said that "Dave" is derivative of "Moon Over Parador", which it is, but it really goes much further back than that. All the way back to "Prince and the Pauper" to be precise. The story of a common man acting as president through a fantastic set of circumstances, makes one wonder what could happen if this actually happened. Just imagine Bill Clinton trying to find jobs for "every American who wants one". Boggles the mind doesn't it? Unfortunately the flip side of that statement is that there are a lot of folks on welfare and perfectly content to remain there, sponging off the rest of us who work for a living. In "Dave", Kevin Kline's ersatz president "Bill Mitchell" decides to stand up and give it a try. Does he really stand a chance? We never find out as he's implicated in a scandal by his former chief of staff (icily played by Frank Langella). Kline's character of Dave is a bit naive at first but soon discovers what is meant by the phrase "Dirty Politics". Sigourney Weaver as the first lady is a delight, carrying herself with more class and dignity than most real first ladies. The rest of the cast is in fine form as well and make this film a trip from beginning to end. In fact it's one of those films you can watch over and over again and pick up something new each time.
