Re: Exceptional essay (Reply to this comment)

Thanks to you and Jiahong for your responses! That's an interesting bit of intrigue about Citizen Kane! I am a bit jaundiced about Kane, so feel no sympathy towards its losing to "How Green Was My Valley," although I think it is an important film for all its cinematic innovation. Hopefully, this reply will go through, as EOPINIONS has had lots of problems in allowing me to respond to comments, lately. Thanks again.

Exceptional essay (Reply to this comment)
by eplovejoy
Dear ispeakup,
Thank you for writing so heartfelt and insightful a critique. It is an extraordinary movie and you've written about it awfully well. I'm eager to read more of your reviews.
One quibble: How Green Was My Valley might have won the Academy Award for Best Picture over Citizen Kane based on its merits, as you suggest. But the race between them was rigged by friends of William Randolph Hearst, who objected to what he saw as Kane's thinly disguised account of his life. It's not Valley's fault, of course, but there is a big asterisk next to its Oscar.
Best wishes,
Peter

A slip (Reply to this comment)

In the second paragraph you substitute John Huston for John Ford. BTW, I think Ford made a number of better movies, so I would dispute that this is one of the greatest movies. Ford was a great director, certainly.
