With so many new movies released every year there are only a few I choose to view multiple times. True Romance is among those few.
What begins like a 90s John Hughes film with sappy misfits finding solace in their mutual inability to fit in with "normal kids" quickly develops into a stylish, believable flick with two highly endearing "anti-heroes."
In my opinion one of the best aspects of the film is the way in which it keeps you off balance. In an age when most of us have seen so many films we are programmed to expect certain dialog, actions and responses, it is exciting to watch a film that breaks those rules. Witness Alabama's reaction when our boy Christian Slater comes back to their apartment from capping his new woman's pimp. When she breaks down and starts crying and we expect her to say how foolhardy and impulsive her man's actions were, she instead says it was the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for her. You gotta love that.
The rest of the film is similarly unpredictable. How many scenes have you seen of mobster druglord tough guys torturing a victim who initially scoffs but then finally gives the info. after some or other torture method? Not Dennis Hopper, our hero's father. Just when you think he's reached breaking point (wouldn't you if someone sliced your hand open with a knife and poured alcohol in it?) he veers off into a long and rambling ethnic offense which results in... well, you'd better go see the movie. Now.
