Pros: Pokes fun at everyday life in a creative way
Cons: Not exactly believable
The Bottom Line: This is a comedy that manages to make people laugh by referring to things everyone can relate to, while not stooping to fart jokes and Jim Carrey obnoxiousness.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Coneheads begins with two aliens, Beldar (Dan Akroyd) and his wife Prymaat (Jane Curtin), crashing their spaceship on Earth. They have come here on some sort of mission, but now they are stranded and must live here until they can be rescued.
The two of them settle into Earth life just fine, managing to blend in with the "bluntskulls", despite the fact that they have incredibly pointy, bald heads. However, an overzealous immigration officer (Christopher Walken), and his butt kissing sidekick (David Spade) become suspicious and determined to hunt them down.
In the years that follow, Beldar and Prymaat become parents to a daughter, Connie, who is far less outlandish than her parents, and knows nothing of Remulak, her parents' home planet. She meets the slightly doltish Ronnie (played by the late Chris Farley), and the two fall madly in love.
Besides the main plotline of immigration's constant pursuit of the "illegal aliens", the story deals with everday life from the point of view of aliens. In this film, even vacuuming the floor is hilarious.
The actors in this film manage to be incredibly funny without going overboard. This makes Coneheads a completly watchable movie. I really thought Christopher Walken and David Spade made a great team. Walken is great, although I've always had trouble thinking of him as a comedic actor. I've grown to really like David Spade, since he's really great on Just Shoot Me.
This show is really about the American Dream, and we can all emphasise as we watch Beldar and Prymaat making a new life for themselves on Earth. The issue of trying to fit into a new culture is one to which any immigrant can relate.
Some people may be turned off of this film, since it is based on an SNL skit, and they may expect it to be as horrible as Night at the Roxbury. Actually, it is pretty good, and manages to not fall into the trap of running the same joke into the ground for two hours.
The film does have some minor downsides, that are probably pretty easy to ignore if you are not really picky. For instance, why is it that all of the aliens speak English? This is, essentially, a silly movie, so I guess such quibbles don't really matter.
Coneheads got some really bad reviews when it first came out, which makes me wonder why these movie reviewers are so crotchety they can't appreciate a good laugh.
