I guess my attitude comes from living around people like Rochester and Antoinette for most of my childhood -- selfish, lying and self-absorbed. It's an interesting turn given what happens later in Jane Eyre. If there had been something to add to the story other than constant shots of the two of them rolling about in bed, I probably would have liked the film more. And yes, the book is so much better than this. -- Telynor

As usual the book (Jean Rhys's last and greatest novel) is better, but the way two generations of men over from England court disaster for the two generations of women familiar with the local culture seems very poignant to me.
I really do not see how you can say there is no character development, unless "character development" only means growth and improvement. The main characters devolve into caddish insensitivity to the point of sadism (Rochester) and desperation and alcoholism that is categorized as madness (Antoinette).

This is a terrible movie, but a great book! Jean Rhys was a fantastic author. I think I'll pull out my copy and do a review of the novel, if it's listed here!

PS They did film the movie in Dominica and used a few Dominicans in the cast!
