I disagree with your opinion about the song. The Tex Ritter rendition is charmingly goofy, and its presence throughout the film becomes the theme for the brilliant Dmitri Tiomkin variations that climax as the clock strikes noon. At that point, Zinneman's shots of all the characters in the story and his close-up angle shot of the swinging clock pendulum are beautifully synchronized with Tiomkin's orchestration, bringing the tension to a fever pitch capped by the sound of the whistle from the arriving train. Then suddenly there's silence and a shot of Cooper...alone. It's one of the most effective uses of music ever in a film. And I kind of like the goofy little song, too.
