Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This small but well crafted and engaging film was Ashley Judd's big-screen debut.
Judd plays a young woman, too sheltered and too early married, who leaves her husband and home in the Tennessee mountains to find what she hopes will be a better life in Florida. There, she copes with all the challenges of a young woman out on her own: finding and keeping a job, sexual harassment, making friends and finding a satisfying love life, improving her mind, and dealing with her soon to be ex-husband. Each aspect of her life is presented thoughtfully, through her eyes, without sensationalism or melodrama.
Judd's debut is impressive. She delivers like a pro and her beauty and poise make watching her a delight. Throughout, you have no doubt she's living Ruby's life, experiencing all her consternation and joy.
This film isn't a blockbuster, but it is a thoughtful and engrossing presentation of an ordinary life. If you're a Judd fan, it's also a must see film.
