Yep, another Nick at Niter has done gone big-time! But this'un reunites Dabney Coleman and Lily Tomlin as boss and secretary (from 9 TO 5's Franklin Hart and Violet Newstead to BH's Milburn Drysdale and Miss Jane Hathaway),Buddy Ebsen with...his character from his other series?, and viewers with Jed Clampett and his kin: Elly Mae, Granny, and Jethro; plus Jethro's sister Jethrine and their ma, and a passel o'country kinfolk who just 'bout turn the aer-o-plane they're journeyin' on into a flyin' version of one-a-them Carnival Cruise Ships, and the party only cranks up when they land on solid (at least they hope it is) ground. What's a-happenin' on this solid ground? Jed's fixin' to git hitched again so Elly Mae'll have herself a new ma to help her grow up right into a fine young woman, even a fine young lady. Thing is, what Jed's found himself is a gold-diggin' little fancy-woman young enough to be Elly's sister (maybe her older sister, but not much older)and shucks, she might even have herself a beau already--but once Jethrine (played, of course, by the same feller--Diedrich Bader--who plays a doggone good Jethro) eyeballs him, well, watch out!
This all happens to a(n) ___-kickin' country soundtrack, and apart from how Jim Varney, Cloris Leachman, the Diedrich Baders, Erika Eleniak, and Lily Tomlin and even Dabney Coleman slip into their characters, I like the smut-free presentation; not just the lack of sex, serious violence, and profanity, but also lines like Jed's response to another woman's (not the gold-diggin' hussy) "Are you asking me to marry you?": "Well, I wouldn't feel right about breedin' if we weren't married." Oh, and a "Grrrrl Power!" salute to Elly Mae as she takes on high-school BOY "rasslers"! and to Miz Jane for how she rescues Granny from the villains' attempt to keep her from rescuing Jed--and Miz Jane doesn't pull it off by herself, Granny pitches in. And, let's see, how does "Dr. Granny" refer to her "calling" (you remember her "spring tonic")? Yep--"I took the Hipper-Critter-cal Oath!" What about Elly, does the movie give her "hipper critters" than ol' Duke and Bessie the chimp? I don't know if they're "hipper," but the chimp (a male this time, I think) is funny!
Note: I absolutely 100% did not wish to offend anyone by writing so much of this epinion in "dialect," but if I did, I am sincerely sorry and hope you accept my apology. Thank all of you for reading.
