The exquisite ... (Reply to this comment)

... cinematography does add to the atmosphere of the film, as does the musical scoring... but Campion couldn't keep our attention simply with beautiful shots and music, otherwise she could've done a National Geographic piece on the flora and fauna of New Zealand...

... I think viewers are also pulled in by the simplicity of the plot... a timeless tale of a woman and two men who desire her... which is then beset with complications... in a setting most Western audiences aren't used to seeing... who knows?

Of the actors, Sam Neill's troubled and tortured Stewart remains with me the most.

Liked your ending comparing the movie to panning a Renaissance painting. Thank you for sharing! ...t-žoo
