Yo, It's Big D. I was wondering if you've ever been to a place in Tampa called Unique Video? I went there and picked this up, as well as two Holocaust films of the three. They also have Guinea Pig there and a few other films you recommended. So have you been?
Peace

Hallway (Reply to this comment)
by jackal59
Great review. I have to comment on the "hallway" scene... I read the Rolling Stone article on Woo c. 1994, and remember it saying that Woo was not happy with the timing of the explosions. So, for the take that ended up in the film he took over firing the pyrotechnics. Chow is a great actor, but it appears that here he is just reacting - the explosions were going off *much* closer behind him than he expected them to!

An Action fans dream. This movie was amazing. However, I have to take exception to your cons. There was one bad thing.
The dubbing.
I hate dubbing in films. I think that it takes away from the film very much, and would much rather see one subtitled then dubbed (El Mariachi for example.) Gratefully, the DVD versions of HB and The Killer (due out Oct. 3rd.) will do this.

Fazer,
Thanks for the kind words. I've really become quite intimate with most of Woo's stuff, but this and the Killer are the ones that I've really dwelled on the most. I'm glad to hear that someone who has seen the film and loves Woo's stuff agrees with my assessment--let's me know I'm not just spouting off. :-)
I agree about HB2--I'd love to see it, and I'd love to see what Woo would do with a Hollywood budget, but I don't believe for a second that a sequel would outdo the original. Still, it'd probably outdo everything that passes for an action film in the USA today. And you're right, the MPAA would probably have a fit.
Thanks again for the comments.

Great Insight (Reply to this comment)

I am a die hard John Woo fan, but this is about Bracken's work. Great job man. You really spent time and analyzed this movie before writing a review. Your opinions are very much like mine and I respect you. You just made me realize even more that Hard Boiled is the epitome of the "Action Film", something I dont think will ever be touched again. People say if John Woo gets clearance to do the much rumored Hard Boiled 2 in the US he will surpass the predecessor, but it wont happen. The MPAA would have a fit if so many people died in the movie, style or no style. Stupid Hollywood!!

Shevy,
Thanks so much! Good to see you around again...I check your profile page every few days, but you haven't put up anything new in awhile.
I wish someone would hire me to write reviews about this stuff--talk about a dream job.
I meant to mention the hallway sequence in the review, but it was running a little long. That is an absolutely incredible scene--especially when one considers how many things could have gone wrong.
Thanks for reading and commenting. I hope you'll check out my review of The Killer as well. I'm starting to add more Hong Kong reviews, so keep checking back.
Thanks again,
Mike B.

Another great review Bracken (Reply to this comment)

I'm a huge John Woo fan ever since I saw The Killer. I'm glad you've taken the time to write a review worthy of such an increadible movie. Why somebody doesn't hire you to do this professionally I will never know.
I have to say, too. My favorite part of this movie was that scene down the hallways that was taken all in one shot! That was like a two minute scene. One mess-up, and the thing had to be redone! Absolutely increadible!
I look forward to reading more of your reviews.

HaHaHa! Didn't take long to find this review after reading your excellent epinion on "The Killer". Actually I LOL when I clicked back to your profile page and saw you listed this movie as a "Love It".
I'm glad to see you've done this movie justice with your top notch review. You definitely know your stuff and I'm happy you've found a place here.
In a way, I'm glad I still have several of your epinions to read... cuz I'll always have a place to go to read quality reviews on the films I love (or want to see).
Thanks again for the thorough epinion on a Chow Yun-Fat classic.

You've really done justice to this great movie!
I hope there are some people who read your review and rent the movie based on what you say. They'll be pleasantly surprised at finding something so great they might not have otherwise ever run across.
