Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
After seeing the second Naked Gun, I felt let down. But, after spending lots of time thinking about it, I’ve decided that my expectations were too high after seeing the first Naked Gun. I guess in retrospect, the second Naked Gun wasn’t that bad, but it was still a lot worse then the first. Anyway, I was a little bit reluctant to see this Naked Gun movie because of my experience with the second, but I felt I owed it to good old Leslie Neilsen and the Zucker brothers, the creators and producers. I remember it like it was yesterday, just kidding; it’s actually a vague memory. Nevertheless, I remember going to my local movie theater and expecting this terrible movie to come on screen. Thank goodness that I was way off in my prediction…
The Police Squad is back is the third and final installment of the Naked Gun. The movie starts off by introducing Frank’s (Leslie Neilsen) retirement and his marriage to Jane Spencer Drebin (Prescilla Presley). Jane wants to have a baby, but in the wake of Frank’s retirement, he is having problems in the sack. Now, to make the matters worse, Frank is being persuaded to sign back onto the Police Squad for one last mission: stopping a mad bomber from blowing up the Academy Awards. Frank accepts the mission and is sent to the state prison alone to blend in with the convicts and perhaps earn the trust of one Rocco Dillon (Fred Ward). Frank helps Rocco escape in a classic genius prison manner. Now it’s up to Frank to betray Rocco, stop the bombing, and repair his marriage after he ignored Jane’s request to remain retired.
From my perspective, this movie got back to the basics. It stuck to everything it did well in the first Naked Gun without becoming too sloppy like the second Naked Gun. This movie created a perfect balance between parody and pure screwball tactics. Everything was carried out in the best manner. The acting, the story, the humor, it was all beautifully mixed together in the last of the Naked Gun movies.
I loved the story in this movie. I think that it was the best story out of all the Naked Gun movies. The idea of Frank going undercover in prison was brilliant. The way he handled himself was hilarious. Between the cafeteria fight scene in prison, all the way to the spoof escape. Just the way in which Frank improved his status in prison was uproarious.
The final sequence in the movie was by far the best part. I mean the laugh factor almost equals the laugh-factor of the final scene in the first Naked Gun. But, I have to say in this Naked Gun, I’ve never scene the character of Frank do so many crazy things. Who would have thought that Frank could mess up a dance number with Pia Zadora, pretend to be Phil Donahue, and then conduct a real love scene with Jane? I know I didn’t expect any of that zaniness, and maybe that’s why I enjoyed this movie so much. As The Final Insult this movie really did pull out all the stops. The makers of this movie weren’t afraid to be more daring because it was the last one and they had to go all out.
The characters were the best in this movie. The veterans were perfect for their roles because this time they were the most experienced. They all acted a lot stronger because they had their most influential scenes in this picture. The new characters were also great. Fred Ward was fantastic as the head convict. His character was so truthful, and so brilliant. At the Academy Awards in the last scene, he was hilarious. The second he found out that Frank was undercover, his character became that much more serious and interesting. Anna Nicole Smith was very funny. I never knew her to be much of an actress, but she actually did okay. When she was coming on to Frank Drebin, I was cracking up. The camera shot of showing her legs was priceless. They made her out to be like 10 feet tall, but then when you saw her she was like 5’10”. All the characters were wonderful, and for their last time around, they did an excellent job.
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult will go down in history as one of the last great parodies to hit the big screen. Of course we get modern flicks like Scary Movie, and Not Another Teen Movie, but none of them measure up even close to this. The makers of this movie are legendary. They’ve brought us Airplane, Top Secret, and all the Naked Guns. I'm really sad this is the last Naked Gun, it was such a great trilogy, and I'll always treasure it. If you like parodies, the other 2 Naked Gun movies, Airplane, Top Secret, or Leslie Neilsen, you’ve got to watch Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. It’s a must see picture with a must see cast and storyline done by an all-star crew.
