Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte are Rival Reporters in I Love Trouble

Written: Feb 06 '04 (Updated Feb 11 '04)
Pros:Some funny parts. Julia Roberts.
Cons:The romance part seemed forced.
The Bottom Line: I Love Trouble was an interesting romantic comedy, but the romance part seemed forced.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

Julia Roberts became famous for her role in Pretty Woman, a romantic comedy. She has been in several different types of movies since then. She seems to return to romantic comedies every so often even though she has branched out into more serious parts as well. I Love Trouble was a romantic comedy she made after being away from that type of movie for a little while.

Peter Bracket was a successful reporter for the Chicago Chronicle. He’d written a book and had a book tour to go on. He had a deadline to meet at the paper and no column. He went back through his past articles, found one from several years before, changed a few things, and then submitted it. His editor realized what Peter did and wasn’t happy.

There was a huge train wreck and Peter went to investigate for a column. He met Sabrina Peterson, a new reporter for the Globe, there. They didn’t like each other that much and started a rivalry. They were both trying to break the story on what caused the train wreck. They continued to run into each other while working on the case. Things with the story became more complicated. They discovered a link to LDF, some kind of hormone that was being given to cows. Sabrina and Peter decided to team up to investigate. They didn’t really trust each other, and they kept some things to themselves, but there was some sort of attraction between them. They were in danger because of their investigations into what really caused the train wreck. Their investigation took them to Las Vegas and a wedding chapel before they stopped trusting each other. They decided to stop working together, but they still ran into each other.

I Love Trouble was released in 1994. It was rated PG and 123 minutes long. I did see the movie in the theater back in 1994. Since then I have seen it on tv a few times. The movie is available on VHS and DVD.

I Love Trouble was a romantic comedy. Sabrina and Peter ended up in some unique situations. Some of them were funny. For being considered a romantic comedy, it wasn’t that funny. I have seen others that have been much funnier. There were some parts of the movie that were more serious as well. The romance part of the movie wasn’t the best either. Sabrina and Peter were good when they were bantering. They started out not liking each other, and then developed feelings for each other. That is when things weren’t as good. Sabrina and Peter really didn’t have any chemistry together.

There was a little bit of mystery in I Love Trouble concerning the train accident. It seemed to be cut and dried about the cause at first. Sabrina and Peter were both investigating the wreck and trying to get a story before the other. They each uncovered things that showed that there was more going on than what they originally thought. Somehow, a hormone given to cows and the company that developed it were connected to the wreck. What turned out to be going on was a little far fetched and wasn’t that complex, but it was entertaining to try to figure out what was going on. Sabrina and Peter did end up in some dangerous situations. There was only a little bit of violence in the movie.

The acting in I Love Trouble was good. I did enjoy Julia Roberts’ performance. She was believable as Sabrina. Nick Nolte has never been one of my favorite actors. He was all right as Peter, though I do think that I would have enjoyed the movie, and the character more, if someone else had played the part. Nolte played the part like Peter was always grumpy. There really wasn’t any chemistry between Julia and Nick. I’ve read and heard that the two really didn’t get along with each other when making this movie, so maybe that was why they looked uncomfortable together at times. The romance between their characters did seem forced and wasn’t that believable. I think that part of the movie would have worked better if someone else had played Peter. Kelly Rutherford had a small part, but she was fine in it. Even though this part was much smaller, I liked her better in it than I did in Angels Don't Sleep Here. Eugene Levy, who played Jim’s dad in the American Pie movies, had a small part. He was funny in the little time he had on screen. Nora Dunn, who was recently in Runaway Jury, also had a small part.

CHARACTERS

Peter - He was a writer for the Chicago Chronicle and had written a book. He was good at his job, but he was resorting to doing small changes to old columns and claiming that they were new to meet deadlines. He was writing about a train wreck and was determined to get the story before Sabrina. He had been married before and his marriage ended because he worked too much. Peter was willing to do whatever he had to do to get a story.

Sabrina - She was a new reporter for the Globe. She worked hard and was determined to get the story before Peter. She’d had a marriage fail because of her work.

I Love Trouble wasn’t the best romantic comedy I’ve ever seen, but it was entertaining. Julia and Nick have been done better work, but their fans may still enjoy seeing it.
