Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Laugh all ya want, but I'm about to praise this movie. Debuting in 1994, Airheads was much maligned as a movie for, well, airheads. So be it. I am an airhead then. I liked just about everything about this movie. So there.
The Lone Rangers? How can you pluralize "Lone Ranger"?
Airheads is about a 3 man band who just can't seem to get a break. The lead singer, Chazz, has lost his gal and a record company has tossed him out. All he wants is for someone to hear his demo. That's all. The three decide on a half-baked scheme to get into the radio station and get them to play it, with visions of instant success dancing in their heads.
Things don't go quite as smooth as they anticipated, and one draws an uzi in anger (ok it was an uzi-like water gun filled with hot sauce). Things go rapidly out of control.. but in a fun way.
We decided to take the cops up on their offer. We ask for a bunch of weird stuff so we can plead insanity later
Brendan 'oh baby' Fraser is Chazz, the lead singer of 'The Lone Rangers.' If there's anyone out there who doesn't already think Fraser can act, well.. I'll save the name calling for some other time. (just kidding!) I adore Fraser. I always have. With Honors is one of my favorite movies, and I adored The Mummy. In fact, I even liked Encino Man. It doesn't hurt that Fraser is so damned drop-dead gorgeous. Sorry guys, the man is perfection! Then to add the long hair in this.. oh man.. *drool* I might add, for the ladies, that he also wears these tight jeans and a short shirt and that abdomen is, well, get the cold shower ready.
Steve Buscemi is Rex, the band's bassist. Now I doubt highly I will get any argument from anyone on his abilities! Buscemi nailed it in Fargo and he does no less here. Even if Brendan Fraser wasn't in this lookin' all hot and stuff, I'd like it just because of Buscemi. He just brings such a natural comedy to everything. He's so smooth about it that you wonder if this is any work at all for him.
Chazz: We've got to send one person out.
Pip: I'll go.
Rex: One of the hostages, doof.
Now toss in Adam Sandler in one his most low-keyed performances as the shy drummer, Pip, and you have a recipe for a wonderfuly fun flick. I usually don't like Sandler. At all. But this time he keeps it pretty low unlike his usual way over the top performances. If he would keep his other roles at this level, I would like his movies quite a bit more. Like him or not though, the man has a ton of hits with movies like Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, Mr Deeds and now Anger Management, which I need to go see because of Jack Nicholson.
The star quality doesn't stop there though. You also have numerous bit parts filled by Chris Farley, Judd Nelson, Michael McKean, Ernie Hudson, Joe Mantegna and David Arquette. Like I said, a very fun movie!
Director Michael Lehmann is known for things like this, with titles such as Heathers, Hudson Hawk, The Truth About Cats & Dogs and numerous TV Show like The West Wing and The Larry Sanders Show to his credit. Lehman likes fun projects, and it shows here.
Then you have a driving soundtrack with songs from White Zombie, House of Pain, Candlebox, The Ramones, Aerosmith, Primus, and a myriad of numbers written by Irving Berlin. Even one song by The Lone Rangers in which I am fairly certain Brendan Fraser actually does his own singing. Hmm think I need to go buy the soundtrack to this. Great songs here!
This 92 minutes of fun is rated PG-13 in the US for a few slightly sexual scenes and some language. My take on it is any age. Nothing in this will warp your children for life. It's nothing they don't hear in school.
I recommend this one to fans of any of the cast, especially Brendan Fraser fans, or if you're just in the mood for a comedy. This is a very fun romp that requires very little thinking.
