Opinion Summary
Smells like propoganda by the House for Un-American Activities. Highly unpalatable.
by Barbelith | Nov 01 '99
Pros: Everything technical about this film is polished. Pacing, Effects, Script. Everything.
Cons: Every single bit of polish has been used to cynically repackage a difficult time in American history in order to suit a conservative political agenda

First of all, you are a complete moron. You obviously are a flaming liberal who eats garden burgers and shops at natural food stores. I suspect you have been to Eugene, Oregon and I am willing to bet you have been involved in several protests which eventually led to nothing. Im sure that you are strongly opposed to the War in Iraq and you might have held up a sign saying something to the tune of "NO BLOOD FOR OIL" or some other nonsense. Now that my opinion of you as a person is out of the way, here is for your movie critiqe: You claim that the movie has a conservative political agenda. However, you are only viewing it with your extreme...ly ridiculous liberal point of view. Why can't you just accept the movie for being a funny portrayal of events that have occured in the United States that lead to this country being the great Nation that it is today. You are being way to critical of a Movie which is accepted and liked by the majority population of the United States Of America. One last thing. I think Liberal hippies like you should be placed in a prison, built on 50,000 acres of Rainforest, which will be heated with whale oil, you should be forced to wear shoes made of baby seal heads and kill your own food.

I agree with you completely. People love it because it's cheese, heart- tugging B.S. I see all these smiling faces stuffing themselves with popcorn and laughing and crying and passing gas. But the critics loved it, too. Very strange. I actually gave a presentation in high school about why I hate the movie. Basically I said what you said. My hatred for the movie was just amplified when it beat PULP FICTION at the Oscars.

I could never put my finger on why I "should" love "Forrest Gump" but really didn't. I don't think I was ever honest enough to say what you just said. Maybe as an American, I bought into the "it's so cute, isn't it?" mentality, without stepping back and looking at it more closely.

I'll confess something else to you. I don't love Tom Hanks like I'm supposed to, either!

Honest, eye-opening review. Thank you.

Poor Hollywood (Reply to this comment)

These guys just can't seem to win. They are usually accused of being too pro-liberal. Now you are claiming that Hollywood is part of the vast right wing conspiracy.

I don't buy into your argument, but it is well written, and the analysis of the movie is solid, so I highly reccommended it.

Still, I think you are off base.

For explaining some of the reasons I intensely dislike this movie. Over-hyped, underacted by Tom Hanks, and just too commercial are added into my reasons, also.

I can see your point of view... (Reply to this comment)

There is no question that Hollywood often seems to have a hidden agenda when it comes to movies.
Air Force One was wasted on me- because all I could concentrate on was that the Vice President played by Glen Close was a weak character and I couldn't help seeing that this was an emphasis on if she had been President- she would never had been able to regain control of Air Force One.
So it's not that I'm oblivious to Hollywood's political views and poisoning perspectives in movies... But Forrest Gump, I think, was more of a "every dog has it's day movie."
Those times were filled with trouble and Jenny would not have been as strong of a character if she lead anywhere close to a perfect life. I think it was very realistic that she didn't walk away unscathed from a life of drugs and abusive men. And yes, it is more likely for someone to end up that way due to an abusive father.
In short- I think, although maybe my love for this movie blinds me, that you looked way too into it.
