The Bottom Line: I would recommend watching it with the family or as a good rainy day movie. It is interesting and worthwhile, especially if you like the original Silas Marner.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
One of the few dramas in which Steve Martin has acted, I thought this movie was much, much better than the box office numbers indicate. A strong performance by Steve Martin, in my opinion, and a great rendition of the classic Silas Marner. If you are looking for a movie in which Steve Martin is portrayed as more than just the funny SNL character that he usually is, you should look no further.
This movie came out in the mid-1990s, and it experienced very little critical acclaim. However, with big stars such as Martin, Gabriel Byrne, Laura Linney, and Catherine OHara, it is a real surprise that it didnt get more recognition.
The premise of the movie lies with the relationship between Martin and his adopted daughter, Matilda. After his marriage fails due to his wifes indfidelity and ultimate conception by another man, a chance encounter with the baby Matilda leads Martins character to establish a greater love for life and relationships than his previously miserly ways would allow.
When Martins character learns that a local politician, played by Byrne, is actually the biological father of Matilda, conceived in an extra-marital tryst with a local drug addict, Martin is reluctant to allow her to spend time with Byres character. Byrnes character ultimately tries to get custody of Matilda, mostly because of his wishes for the political gain fatherhood would bring, and a trial ensues. This movie speaks to the powerful bond between families, even non-traditional ones, and also touches the heart of those who have been changed by a child. I vote it a must-see.
