BeastieGirl's Full Review: Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
The Adventures of Prisilla, Queen of the Desert is a film with just about everything and anything you can imagine. It's got humor, although one should be as open minded as possible to thoroughly enjoy all the humor in this crazy movie. There is drama abound (but what can you expect from a bunch of drag queens??), as well as some very serious undertones throughout.
I'd heard talk of this movie for ages and finally broke down and rented it. I can safely say it was well worth the $1.99 I paid, and certainly would have been worthy of the big screen price. The film takes place on the road in Australia, a road trip that is, from Sydney to Alice Springs. With pretty much nothing in between, we follow three drag queens on a trip across a forlorn desert in a passenger bus appropriately named Pricilla.
The constant bickering as well as change of clothes is absolutely hilarious. Worse than a bunch of catty teenage girls, the three queens, Bernadette, Felicia and Mitzi are so self-assured and full of themselves, they don't always seem to realize that being away from Syndey is not always as safe as they think. There are some people who are not willing to accept who they are and I think that has a lot to do with the entire message of the movie.
Although the "girls" encounter opposition, they seem to be able to find solace within themselves, having enough inner strength to get them through whatever comes their way. Lip-syncing to Abba appears to be a favorite pastime and they can't seem to get enough Stoli and tonic to ever completely satisfy them.
This film sets an example that not enough people follow- take pride in who you are, take pride in how you look, and have as much fun as possible.
Go in with an open mind and you will surely enjoy it. You will find yourself randomly referring back to Pricilla and laughing about it.
One quirky note- Guy Pierce plays the one of the most flamboyant drag queens (but aren't they all?) I've seen in a while... coincidentally, he also plays one of the straightest guys I've ever seen in L.A. Confidential.
