Johnny Depp stars as Wood and Martin Landau took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of creepy old Bela Lugosi. Wood befriended Lugosi late in his career when no one would hire him. It's Ed Wood as Tim Burton wants to see him, positive and ever hopeful, infectiously enthusiastic.
I loved this movie so much I even went out and bought the book it was based on, "Nightmare of Ecstasy". I had to after I saw this John Waters quote on the back cover: "I stayed up all night reading it with my mouth hanging open."
