Opinion Summary
|
Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures by Mike_Bracken | Aug 23 '00 Pros: Great performances from Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey, coupled with a compelling story and solid direction make this film one of the best of the 90's. Cons: Jackson shortchanges us at the climax by using onscreen cards to tell us of the story's aftermath

This is the best film I have ever seen! (Reply to this comment)

I happened on it late night on cinemax vangard and have been intrigued by the event since then. Your opinion conveys the story and power of the film quite well. I agree with you on the conclusion, he could have taken it further and shown the effect the final ruling had on the two girls. Another movie simular to this one, in that the two girls were very drawn to each other is FUN the true story of two girls who murder a woman after meeting and encountering a strange energy between each other. The two girls are as desperately entwined as were pauline and juliet. It lacks the power and understanding of Heavenly Creatures, but is an interesting film.

Great review. (Reply to this comment)

I actually saw this film for the first time about a month ago... It was part of my "must see everything Peter Jackson" thing I had going on after seeing the unrated version of Dead Alive. And I agree, it's a great film.
Now, the only Peter Jackson film I have left to see is Meet the Feebles...

This is one of my favorite films, and I would like to thank you for penning an excellent review.
Even though I have seen this film many times, I'm tempted by your review to try to watch it again this evening.
Thanks!

I've been putting off The Frighteners for a long while now, mainly because when I saw it in the theater, I hated it. Of course, the passage of a few years time may make it better this time around (which is what happened with Natural Born Killers), but I'm still approaching it with a fair degree of trepidation.

Well Mike, you now have to review "The Frighteners". It's probably Jackson's only film widely known to American audiences, and I'd be curious as to your take on it. Great review of this great movie by the way.

Brian,
Agreed--I think the film itself has little interest in the real world details surrounding the case and is far more enamored with the idea that these girls created a world of their own--and how that affected others' perception of them, and the ramifications of that on their relationship, etc.
How's that for some English?

Yes, that was almost English.

Great job as always, but I see the film as "merely" exploring the girls' friendship: the circumstances which brought it about, the giddiness, and the event which forcibly ended it. The Parker-Hulme case is fascinating, but I think this film explores exists only in (and around) the "Fourth World".

Quite simply, one of my top 20 best films from the '90s.
