I saw "Beloved" because Oprah recommended it.

She's always recommended good books and movies in the past and she truly put her heart into this project. The movie follows Toni Morrisette's book of the same name faithfully, yet it still doesn't work--WHY?
Danny Glover, Oprah and the rest of the cast were believable and played their parts well. The photography was breathtaking! Yet, still this movie did not work for me. It's one of the few movies I resent paying money to see.
First, I think the main problem is sticking too close to the book for dialogue. The scenes ran together with the efficiency of a strobe light. Flash, scene, flash, scene, without any kind of bridge to carry the movie goer across.
Secondly, after many graphic scenes, I believe the viewer becomes used to the horror and the violence and it no longer makes the impact that it should.
And finally, I don't think Beloved's identity was a shock to anyone... except maybe the characters in the movie. I had it figured out when the girl came crawling up to the house. I think most viewers did as well.
I have to say, this is the worst movie I've ever watched, and it didn't have to be. The acting was fine (though Oprah interpretated her character Sethe to be in some kind of stupor), the cinematography was brilliant, the sets were extremely good, and it gave the feeling of the period... yet I believe the script could have been smoother.
I walked out at the end of this movie having more questions than I did when I walked in. But on the bright side, this is the only time Oprah has recommended something I didn't agree with. And maybe there will NEVER be a sequel (that's what I'm hoping for anyway!).
