(I do not give away the plot with this review)
The movie is set in Montana before, during and after the first World War. The movie revolves around a retired U.S. cavalry officer Colonel Ludlough (Anthony Hopkins) and his three sons. The eldest Alfred (Aidan Quinn) the middle Tristan (Brad Pitt) and the youngest of the three Samuel
(Henry Thomas).
Colonel Ludlough's wife did not care for the Montana wilderness or the lifestyle it demanded. She moved back east to the city when the boys were very young. This left the Colonel to raise his children on his own. He not only raised them to be fine young men, they were as close as a family could be. Samuel went college attained a degree and learned to speak fluent German. When he returned home he brought his bride to be, Susannah (Julia Ormond) to meet his family. Susannah was a very pleasant, cultured and educated woman.
Tristan
Tristan was the wild one of the three boys. He was not college educated and had no intentions of it. He liked to hunt and break wild horses. He spoke Suix and learned the Indian ways. He was deadly with a rifle and rode a horse like the wind. Susannah would wake in the mornings to the sound of Tristan breaking horses in the coral. She found herself attracted to the handsome, wild Tristan...
World War I
Samuel wanted to prove himself. If he went to fight the German aggression he could prove to himself, his father and his fiancée that he was a better man. All three boys were off to the war in less than a week. Tristan went to protect his younger brother Samuel and for no other reason. The war devastated the family, not all of the boys lived through it. It created an disturbing hatred within what was left of the family.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend this movie for about anyone. It's a true classic. The cast was outstanding. Although the scope of the movie is enormous and covers the majority of Tristan Ludlough's life, It was put together very well! The scenery was pleasing and acting superb! Legend of the Falls would be a fine addition to any movie collection.
