Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This is one of the best comedies of the 1990’s and maybe even of the past half-century. It might even been the best film that Jim Carrey ever made. It’s a priceless comedy, and it’s flat out hilarious. There are so many comical scenes, and just when you think they can’t squeeze any more humor in, they give you Jim Carrey demonstrating how to light a fart on fire. This movie pulls out all the stops.
I wanted to see this movie ever since I became a fan. I first started watching Jim weekly on In Living Color, and after I saw the first Fire Marshall Bill sketch, I adored him. Then I saw Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and then The Mask. I loved Jim Carrey in all these movies, so I thought, why not see Dumb and Dumber, and that’s precisely what I did. I saw Dumb and Dumber knowing that Jim was playing a hilarious role, and I that’s how I got suckered in.
Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) is just a limo driver. Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) is just a dog groomer that does his job through a van that has been transformed to look like a dog. But together, they are 2 losers that make the funniest and dumbest combination. Lloyd picks up this girl named Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) whom he falls instantly in love with. Once they arrive at the airport, they share an uncomfortable embrace (suggested by Lloyd of course saying, “Hug?”), and then Mary leaves inside the airport. Lloyd is watching her walk away, and notices that she “accidentally” drops her briefcase. He runs out of his limo, snags the briefcase, and tries running onto the plane to give it to her. It’s too late, and Lloyd convinces Harry to go to Aspen with him to deliver it. The leave in the dog-van, but they actually enter town in a mini-bike. Lloyd and Harry think it’s just some innocent briefcase, but what they discover leads them in a dangerous path with 2 criminals.
The idea for this movie is great. I mean 2 idiots being secretly chased by 2 criminals. That’s funny, and that’s original. The dumb luck that Lloyd and Harry come across is priceless. It enables the “Sea Bass scene” along with many others. Never have I seen so many genius comical sequences in one movie. I think there was a 10-minute period where I didn’t stop laughing. Just the way that everything tied together was perfect.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are brilliant. Lauren Holly is good too, but I just have to start with Jim and Jeff. Their performances were so funny that I was laughing days after I initially saw the movie. I just kept playing the sidesplitting jokes in my head (i.e. when the old lady in a motorized wheel chair robs Lloyd), and cracking up. Jim Carrey, chipped tooth and all, was the best. It was scary how well he played such a moron. From his pick-up line to the Austrian woman, all the way to the ketchup packet joke he played on the barber. Jim just delivered his lines with such flamboyancy, and such energy that it really made the lines that much more influential. But, Jim definitely couldn’t of done it without Jeff Daniels. He was also a screen gem. His comical style was flawless. He also nailed the part so well. He seemed genuinely stupid and that contributed to the fact that his lines were genuinely uproarious. From his I Got Worms idea, all the way to his snowball fight with Mary, Jeff Daniels just did a bang up job. Lauren Holly as Mary fit the dream girl quite perfectly in Lloyd’s eyes. She possessed those silly qualities that Lloyd had and she was gorgeous. Mary was really down to Earth, and Jim admired that in some way, even though he was unable to express it really. But, Lauren did a great job as an actress because she had to play a serious role while opposite Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. That would be tough to do. I commend you Lauren Holly.
This movie had everything a comedy should have. It had great characters, great scenes, great dialog, great jokes, and of course, a great storyline to follow. I think the characters were the best though. I mean there were so many different kinds of people that came up that had to be together at some point. It was just really funny to see how they compared. This is possibly the Farrelly Brothers best movie.
If you liked Something About Mary, Kingpin, Shallow Hal, or Me, Myself & Irene then you need to see Dumb and Dumber because it’s the first movie the Farrelly Brothers did, and maybe the best. If you like comedy, Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, or Lauren Holly this is a must see also. But, if you like intelligent comedies, like Woody Allen movies, this might not be for you. Dumb and Dumber is an easy, and entertaining watch, and you’ll be amazed by how many laughs you get out of it.
