“Tomorrow is a long time away, this night can last forever.” These words from Billy Joel’s song “This Night” are a perfect epigraph to this movie. “Before Sunrise” is about two young people in their 20’s--a French student, Celine (Julie Delpy) and an American slacker, Jesse (Ethan Hawke), spending one night in Vienna. This movie would be especially interesting to watch for anyone who has ever backpacked or traveled in Europe. I believe that meeting that special someone while traveling is a dream of many people.
We meet the characters on the train from Budapest to Vienna. While on the train, Jesse reveals to Celine that he has an idea for a TV show, which would run year round and would follow one day in the lives of ordinary people. Celine laughs and says that it would be very boring to watch. This mini-conversation is a preview to the movie itself--we follow one night in the lives of two people. And what a night it is! “Before Sunrise” has no twists and turns of plot. The movie is all about conversation, which takes place in many different places in Vienna. And the conversation is not your typical Hollywood full of cliches script--it is real, smart and wide open.
