Few movies have failed to capture my utmost attention the way Before Sunrise has. I was fortunate enough to catch the opening scenes of this flick on late night TV; a few minutes afterwards, I was unable to change the channel or go to bed; by its conclusion, I was mesmerized.
I found the down to earth dialogue the most charming feature of this little movie. While it may lack the witty, saucy babble of a Quentin Tarantino film, it retains the more admirable qualities of being genuine, realistic, and most importantly, believable. The impromptu nature of the conversations between the couple provides an accurate, unimagined picture of two people realistically falling in love.
I must agree with those who say this work lacks all the cliched, stereotypical qualities of bigger budget counterparts spat out by Hollywood. Second thoughts make me wonder if this movie actually had a budget, or even if it was simply filmed with a camcorder. But the power evoked by a true, unadulterated love story is enough to overcome such shortcomings. My only gripe was the ending; I was expecting to see if they would both come through with their promises... maybe that's being left for a sequel?
