Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
This is one of those movies that makes me realize why I never listen to critics. All I heard was negative things about this movie. The critics hated it, reviews online hated it and people I talked to said it wasn't very good. So of course I had to check it out for myself.
I was almost surprised when I liked Judge Dredd.
Dredd is based on a comic book that I never read so I had nothing to judge it against which is probably why I liked it. The story is this, Dredd (Stallone) is a supercop (isn't he always?) in the future. Cops are judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one and Dredd's the best. Then a hardened criminal (Armand Assante) breaks out of jail and kills a prominent citizen. All the DNA evidence points to Dredd who is convicted of the crime. On the way to the Aspen Penal colony the transport is shot down and (of course) Dredd survives along with Rob Schneider (the comic relief). The two work together to bring the real killer to justice and clear Dredd's name.
Standard movie. There are some good lines by most of the characters and lots of chases and explosions. Don't go into Judge Dredd looking for deep meaning or lots of soul searching. This is a guy's comic book movie. Things move fast and get blowed up. It's a lot of fun as well. All the actors do well with the material, even Stallone who has often been criticized for his acting. Everyone is fine here.
