It was only recently that I discovered the wonderful music of Selena. I was watching cable channel TNT one night, and the movie Selena (1997)happened to be on. I had never even heard of Selena up until that point, and after watching the movie, I enjoyed the music so much, that I immediately went to Amazon.com and bought a copy of the movie, and several of her CDs, which I listen to almost on a daily basis. Having never heard of Selena until after her death, however, I wanted to learn more about her life, and her music, and that is how I came to discover the video Selena Remembered.
This video/documentary is narrated throughout by Edward James Olmos, who also plays the part of Selena's father in the 1997 movie, Selena. At the very beginning of the video is a very old home video of a very young Selena (age six, I believe), singing on stage at her father's restaurant, which is where she first began singing publicly. Her father's restaurant was forced to close due to the collapse of the Texas oil industry, and the band, Selena Y Los Dinos, was forced to take to take to the road and try to make a living on music professionally, in order to put food on the table.
Throughout the video are rare and fascinating interviews with her father, brother, sister and husband, who were all a part of Los Dinos. It is very interesting to hear them talk about Selena, and what she and her music meant to each one of them. The interviews that I enjoyed the most, though, were the ones with Selena herself. It was a delight to hear her describe firsthand getting started in the music business, their struggles, their triumphs, her first big number one hit Como La Flor, and many other aspects of being a part of the music business. My favorite interview with Selena is right before she is to go onstage for a concert, and she is describing how nervous she is. It is refreshing to hear her admit that; it is a reminder that big stars are human just like us.
This video is full of music video and concert clips as well, which to me were as equally enjoyable as the rare interviews. Video clips include the songs La Llamada, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, La Carcacha, and No Me Queda Mas. Concert clips include the songs Amor Prohibido, No Debes Jugar, Fotos Y Recuerdos and Baila Esta Cumbia. My favorite concert clip on this video is Selena performing the song Como La Flor at the Houston Astrodome in February 1995, which sadly was her last big performance. She was shot a month later by her fan club president, who was accused of embezzling money from Selena's fan club.
If you are a fan of Selena, or of Tejano music, this video is a Must Have for your collection. Even if you have never even heard Selena's music before, I gaurantee that you will still enjoy this documentary of Selena's life. I highly recommend this video.
