Some people don't get the point to this movie. It's a story of a young man who likes to devirginize even younger girls, convinced that nothing will happen to him because they're virgins. One of his previous sexual partners finds out that she has the HIV virus, and she had only had sex with him. So she spends the movie trying to catch up to him before it's too late.
On the surface, the movie seems a little raw, and uncomfortably real for most people. It's shot documentary-style. The actors were just kids that director Larry Clark saw before he started filming. It's not as shocking as people make it out to be. There are 3 sex scenes, but only a tiny bit of nudity.
I wouldn't say that parents should watch this movie with their kids, because it is painstakingly realistic and will be uncomfortable. It's the life of teenagers uncensored. There are some scenes that involve drug use, but no consequences ever come up for that. If you want your child to practice safe sex, rent them this movie and let them watch it. Not only does it put out a good message about unprotected sex, it's a commentary about how most teenagers today are completely oblivious to consequence.
The way that the characters act and the things that they do is very close to the way that teenagers actually act. The movie shows what could really happen to young people if they continue to think "this could never happen to me." The irony in the movie is powerful. Those people who watch the movie and identify with the characters on a more shallow level will love the movie because it's a crazy, funny movie about a certain lifestyle. If you're intelligent enough to look more deeply into it, you realize the tragedy of today's youth. The people who aren't intelligent enough to get the message are the people who need to get the massage the most. If you're a teenager and you watch this movie, it should hit home pretty hard.
For example, in the guestbook for my page dedicated to this movie ( the address should be in my profile), there are many displays of ignorance (which I later cleaned out):
"This is the lifestyle I'm livin'"
"I LOOOOOOOVE TELLY HE'S SO HOT AND CASPER IS FINE AS HELLLLLLL!!!!"
"I'd do Telly and Casper, I usually go for that type of guy."
"I like this movie because it reminds me of my own life, smokin' blunts and drinkin' 40s all day!"
I haven't come to the conclusion on whether this is a good influence on teenagers in general or not. I liked the movie, and if you're not shallow and you pay attention, you probably will too.
Powerful and passionate, colorful and compelling, Larry Clark s KIDS is 24 frenetic hours in the lives of a group of contemporary teenagers who, like ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
