Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Entertaining. Fred Ward and Michael Gross.

Cons:Not as good as the original.

The Bottom Line: Tremors 2: Aftershocks was not as good as the first movie, but it was still entertaining.

When a movie is successful, it is usually only a matter of time before a sequel is made. Sometimes the sequels are good and other times they are horrible. It took several years after the release of Tremors, but Tremors 2: Aftershocks was released.

Earl Bassett was still living in Perfection Valley. He was trying, unsuccessfully, to breed and raise ostriches when he was given an offer. Graboids were killing people in a deserted area of Mexico which had forced an oil refinery to close. The Mexican government was willing to pay Earl to deal with the problem. Grady, a young man who was sort of a graboid groupie, convinced Earl to take the job. Grady was also going even though he didn’t know what he was doing. Things were going well at first and then Earl and Grady discovered that there were more graboids than they could handle alone. Earl decided to call in Burt and his supply of weapons for some help. Shortly after Burt arrived, the graboids changed and the methods Earl had been using were no longer effective.

Tremors 2: Aftershocks was set some time after the first movie. It was never said how much time had passed, but I’m guessing it had been a few years. Val was briefly mentioned near the beginning in a short explanation about why he wasn’t around. Once Burt was back, it was said how his wife Heather was visiting her sister. From what Burt said, she had been there for a while and it seemed like their marriage was in trouble. It would have been nice if she and Val had been back. I am glad that there was an explanation for why they weren’t around. There was a decent connection to the first movie while still having a plot that wasn’t just a copy of the original. The movie could stand alone, but certain things would make more sense if the movies are watched in order.

The first movie had a bit of mystery in it before it was shared exactly what the monsters were and how people were being killed. There really wasn’t much mystery in Tremors 2: Aftershocks since Earl and Grady knew they were dealing with graboids when they went to Mexico. A small amount of mystery was added in once something strange started happening with the graboids. It did take a little while before it became clear what happened. That added a few surprises with the way the graboids changed and were doing new things. Changing the graboids a bit did help to keep things interesting. There really wasn’t a lot of suspense and certain things were predictable, but the movie was still entertaining. It wasn’t as good as the first movie though, something that tends to happen with sequels.

Tremors 2: Aftershocks had some action that was provided by the hunt for the graboids. Earl started off very prepared to deal with the graboids when he and Grady first arrived in Mexico. Earl came up with a method for killing the graboids that was slightly modified from something that had been done late in the first movie. Earl’s method involved explosions and was very effective, though it was a bit messy. Once the graboids changed, they had to try different ways of dealing with them. There was a little bit of violence that wasn’t too graphic. I think this movie was less violent than the first one. Some scenes had a little bit of humor that tended to be provided by something that Grady said or did. It did seem like he was around just for comic relief. Earl and Burt also said and did a few funny things.

Earl and Burt were the only characters that returned from the first movie. They were both still living in Perfection, but most of the movie was set in Mexico. Earl had gotten some publicity and made a bit of money after the first encounter with the graboids. Unfortunately, things hadn’t gone well for him since then. He was reluctant to go hunting for graboids but decided to go. It did seem like Earl was trying to be like Val had been in the first movie. Fred Ward handled the part well. Burt was still obsessed with guns and weapons and he showed up in Mexico loaded down like he was going off to war. Michael Gross was good in the part.

Grady was a young man who had read all about Val and Earl and was acting like a groupie. Grady was the one that talked Earl into accepting the job. He was kind of goofy and he frequently didn’t know what he was doing. He saw hunting the graboids as some sort of fun adventure that would make him rich. Christopher Gartin wasn’t anything special in the part. Kate was a woman working for the oil company. She was one of only a few employees who were still there when Earl and Grady arrived. There was some sort of attraction between her and Earl. Helen Shaver was fine in the part. The few other people who were around were barely shown and not that important to the overall plot.

Main Cast

Christopher Gartin - Grady
Michael Gross - Burt
Helen Shaver - Kate
Fred Ward - Burt

S.S. Wilson - Director

DVD Information

I think I first saw Tremors 2: Aftershocks when it was on one of my cable channels, but I could be wrong about that since it has been a long time since I first saw the movie. It is available on DVD. I actually have it as part of a set with all the Tremors movies. That version has no extras. I believe it is also available by itself. If it is, I don’t know what kind of extras are on it. The movie has been turning up on the HBO channels recently.

Tremors 2: Aftershocks was a mostly entertaining sequel. Unfortunately, it failed to be as entertaining as the original, which will more than likely disappoint some people.
