"Strange Days" is one of the most violent, disturbing, profound, and awesomely powerful films ever made. It takes the viewer on an incredible journey totally unlike any other ever put on film. That it has been seen by so few people is a sad fact, but it must be attributed to the intense violence that is often displayed in a "first person" method unlike anything you've ever seen. "Strange Days" is set in the last two days of the millenium, December 30 & 31, 1999. The film was released in 1995, and it painted a harsh picture of a time that has not come to pass yet but that is certainly possible in the near future.
In the first seen of the film, the main character, Lenny (Ralph Fiennes), says, "Boot it," signaling the start of a "playback" and the beginning of an action sequence that we will not soon forget. We get the feeling that we are actually in the film as we and Lenny are "jacked in," through the attachment of a "squid" to Lenny's skull. We then experience in "first person" a robbery gone wrong and we are chased through a restaurant, up the stairs, to the edge of the building, and then without the camera ever cutting away, off the side of the building to our death. Nothing like this sequence has ever been attempted on film before, where not only does a character go through an experience like this, but that character's precise thoughts and emotions are linked to Lenny's brain through the squid. This technology is the new VR that is seen often portrayed brilliantly in "Strange Days." In this not-so-futuristic world, illegal clips of playbacks featuring extremely risque situations of violence such as this, sex, and more, are sold on the black market for thousands of dollars.
Ralph Fiennes ("The English Patient," "Quiz Show," "Schindler's List")turns in a very powerful lead performance as Lenny. Angela Bassett ("Vampire in Brooklyn," "Waiting to Exhale") turns in the best performance of her career as a limo driver, Mace, who becomes more and more involved in Lenny's troubles as the story progresses. Also staring and turning in another great performance is Juliette Lewis ("Natural Born Killers," "Kalifornia) as Faith, a rock star and Lenny's former girl friend whom he still loves.
