Pros:Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, slow romantic build up
Cons:NONE!!
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is...this is a wonderful slow paced romantic movie that I highly recommend.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of viewing one of my favorite movies...once again!! Let's see, how many times does that make? I never grow tired of watching Bridges of Madison County.
My daughter (Chalathra) cannot see what it is I like about this movie...and laughs as she says I like watching corn grow too. Well, she is right...some things, I believe come with age and experience. No longer do I need everything to be so fast paced that I don't know which end is up...nor do I have to try to figure out what is going on as a plot twists and turns. I like the quiet emotion of Bridges of Madison County. I like the slow meandering of two people learning about each other, and learning about two different styles of living. Learning about love...true, deep, passionate love. I like the calm of this movie.
Details
This story was written by Robert Waller. I enjoyed the novel a bit more than the movie, but they did a good job of movie making from this book.
Meryl Streep was rightfully nominated for an Academy Award for this film. Her Italian accent amazed me, if I hadn't known better I would have thought that she was Italian.
Clint Eastwood Directed, Produced and Starred in Bridges of Madison County, I feel showing what a versatile actor he really is. I'm sure many men went to the theater with their wives, expecting a Clint Eastwood action packed film! I love that he was willing to show this softer gentler side of himself.
This film is available on VHS and DVD and is rated PG13 and runs 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Briefly
This Clint Eastwood directed movie is set in Iowa in 1965 when National Geographic photographer, Robert Kincaid meets Italian housewife, Francesca Johnson in a small Iowa town. Robert is there to photograph a couple of covered bridges...when he meets Francesca. Over the next week, they spend time together and grow in a relationship that we often can only dream of. The majority of the 2 hour and 15 minute movie is spent watching as these two fall in love and then learn of the choices that they must make. Difficult choices between this new found love and the reality of her family, her husband Richard and her teen age children. What she calls the "details of her life".
My Favorite Line
During their brief, romantic affair as Francesca talks to Robert about her life on the farm and her family she refers to all that has happened to her...her marriage, having children, living in a rural town as the 'details of her life". Details she says that become her life, losing herself in all of the 'details'. She then speaks about their time together and says 'I was suddenly another woman, and yet maybe more myself than I have ever been'. I believe that is how life is for many women (probably men too)...we are swept up in our details of our day, and somehow forget who we are. This passionate time with Robert reminds her that she is more than a housewife and a mother...she is a woman.
My Recommendation
I highly recommend this movie, for anyone who loves a love story and a tear jerker. I've watched this movie so many times and still cry when I see Francesca sitting in the truck at the end and is watching Robert, rain falling and sitting next to her husband....making a difficult choice. Definitely hankie time for me!
