Pros:Fights
Drunken Fights

Cons:Another Kung Fu Theater Class Film
Bad Chinese/English Language selection

The Bottom Line: This is Jackie Chan, which means the fights are definitely a highlight, but in his earlier career, it was all cliche. Recommended to serious fans.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

First off, this film is NOT displaying the best manner of combat. Second, this wasn't the film I wanted to see.

Well, I've seen what is apparently Drunken Master 2. I thought I was renting the film for a second time. As luck would have it, this is actually the prequel to the “Legend of the Drunken Master” which was popular in the US in 1994.This film is actually the 1978 Drunken Master. It takes place years before the more popular sequel.

As films go, this is more Kung Fu theater fodder. The story is as such, Fei-Hung (Jacky Chan) is a well trained Martial Artist. He wins all his fights, until he tangles with an old woman. Later learning this was his Aunt, his father sentences him to training under a Master. Upon meeting Su Hua Chi (Siu Tien Yuen), He runs for cover. As luck (and fate) would have it, Su is much quicker than expected. Su takes Fei to his training camp where he trains Fei. Meanwhile, a contract has been arranged for the death of his Father.

The simplistic nature of the genre makes it a very short lived story. The punch behind this film is the Martial Arts action. First off, it's Jacky Chan (now, Jackie Chan). This means that the fights will most definitely be colorful. As Jacky Chan bounces and rolls over the set, he beats the tar out of anyone in his way. Because of this, the fights make this film worth it alone. When Fei is later trained in the “Art of the Eight Drunken Gods”, the fights step up a notch.

What I didn't care for in this film was the Cantonese soundtrack. For some odd reason, the Cantonese was in both English and Chinese. It toggled back and forth between the two languages. This was very annoying.

What you're pretty much in for here is old Kung Fu theater fodder. The film is entertaining, but not really worth more than $2 investment. The other option is to wait for in on TV. I'm sure Spike TV or something will have this in Kung Fu theater. Option #2 would be to purchase this video at either the dollar store or as part of a collection. Don't get me wrong, it'd a good film, but it appeals to a very limited genre. And among the other Kung Fu Theater films out there, it's one in a million.
