wickershamb's Full Review: Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Oh man, it's been five years since the movie about bad big screen flicks, hit it's own big screen, and about 2 years since the television show disappeared, but the excitement factor is still alive and well in MST3K: The Movie.
Now anyone reviewing MST3K is generally already a fan of the show, the characters, and if they've taken the time to write about it, then they are probably going to rant and rave about how great the movie is (Minus Mr. Negative Pants who decided NOT to recommend it, but Im sure he saw another movie). So what do I talk about when I write this? I'll start by pointing out why this movie makes it different, and better than the regular television shows you can hack up on good ol' Sci-Fi, or Rhino Video.
First and foremost, you are hit with new environments. The opening shot of the movie has Mike Nelson(Played by.. well Mike Nelson)running on a giant Hamster wheel off to the side of the deck. We soon see Tom Servo's(Kevin Murphy)underwear adorned room, The Basement quarters where Crow T. Robot(Trace Bealieu, and the "T" stands for "the") is trying to tunnel.. out of a spaceship to Earth. Oh, you little doo-dad you. You also get to see the three comrades walk from the theater to the deck in the hallway, something never before witnessed by a MSTie(Definition-MST3K Fan).
But that's not why you watch this movie, no you want what you paid for. Three guys watching a bad movie and make funny, sometimes high brow, sometimes low brow, sometimes way over your head, jokes. And dang it you get it! A full 74 minutes of it. Wait..isn't the show 92 minutes long? Why is the movie shorter? Well, little one. First off.. NO ASKING QUESTIONS! Ha! Secondly, it's because the test audiences felt that the extra host segment(periods between the in movie sections) and the 12 minutes of film were too long. So they cut it. Too bad. It's some funny stuff. But that's all right, because this show gives the term "One Liner" the golden record it deserves.
But there arrrre a few down points.
First and foremost is the absence of TV's Frank(Frank Coniff). Obviously they could do nothing about this, but it kinda.. hurt my feelings. Secondly, I felt the character Mike Nelson was a bit too.. "non-Mike". He seemed a bit more sedated in the movie than one is used to. Of course this entire review is comparing it to the show, and that might be unfair, but what else do we compare it to? This movie is off in a category all to it's own, and it achieves what it set out to do. Make you laugh yourself silly because a guy with a really deep voice is deemed the hero of a film. Even if he does nothing heroic, is kinda meaty, and whines and complains. MST3K should be seen by anyone, and everyone to help along world peace. This is best watched with a group of friends, because jokes are more widespread over a mass of people. Plus laughter is infectious.
