mzkito's Full Review: Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie
I will never forget the first time that I stumbled upon the television show Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (or MST3K for short). I was in the hospital, having just given birth to my first son, and I did not know the local cable line-up in that town. After all of my visitors and my husband had gone home for the night, I settled in to flip through the channels. After flipping through several times, I finally settled on this old cheesy movie, with three little characters along the bottom of the screen. I didn't quite "get it" at this point, but as they began making wisecracks and sarcastically dubbing in dialogue for the movie's characters, I was soon in pain, laughing so hard that I almost popped my stitches! I soon realized that I was watching the Sci-Fi network, which we did not have at home. I'd never forgotten that show, and the gut-wrenching giggles that it gave me.
Well, we lost our cable shortly after bringing our son home. It was just one of those extra expenses we decided to forego during the rough times. I visited my mother's house often to catch up on the soaps and to watch some game shows. One day while scanning the channels, I discovered that Sci-Fi had been added to our line-up. Well, you can bet I squeeked enough out of our monthly budget to have our cable reinstated, and I soon became addicted to this show, recording as many episodes as I could to watch over and over. I've seen just about every episode. Each one begins in the same fashion...mean ole Pearl sends Mike and his robot cronies an old science or mystery film, which they must watch, as her way of tormenting them. The segues before and after commercials are not nearly as funny as the movie scenes.
When MST3K put out a feature film, I knew it would be great. And I wasn't wrong. However, I expected a little more. It was, in essence, just one more episode under their belt, but put on the big screen for more people to see. I am surprised it did not do better in the ratings, as it is simply hilarious!
In the movie, they are forced to watch an old science fiction movie called "This Island Earth", in which aliens have landed on Earth and are studying our scientists, because their planet is dying. The actor who once played the "Professor" on Gilligan's Island stars in this old movie, and Mike and the robots make countless references to the Skipper and MaryAnn. Their quips cannot be put into words without losing some of the humor, so I will not attempt that here
I have seen many MANY regular episodes that were actually funnier than the feature film, but that takes nothing away from the fun and hilarity of this one episode.
If you've never seen the television show, I would highly recommend seeing this movie. I can almost guarantee you will be channel-surfing straight to the Sci-Fi channel. It is becoming harder and harder to find on tv, though - you will have a better chance if you look late-night on weekends. Good time to set the VCR.
