Suspend your disbelief and hang on for the ride! Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as "Eraser" Deputy U.S. Marshal John Kruger of the federal Witness Protection Program, aka "WITSEC". His job is to erase the past of witnesses who testify in high profile cases.
We join him at work, saving a small-potatoes mafioso who ratted out his godfather. The thugs have "Johnny C" (Robert Pastorelli) and his wife hog-tied in their modest suburban house, ready to administer the coup de grace, when Kruger appears and kills all the bandits. He pours fake blood on the still tied victims and tells them to play dead while he takes a few Polaroids. Then he puts the thugs in body bags and drags them out to his van. Finally, he pours gasoline all over the house, gets the guy and his wife, and roars off in the van, just as the house explodes!
Abandoning the van and bodies in a convenient harbor, they drive off in a nondescript car. It seems Johnny C has been erased once before and blew his cover by going to a Pizzeria in the old neighborhood. Kruger agrees to help him disappear again this once, but never again. Johnny C profusely thanks Kruger and promises "if you ever need anything..."! Little does he know then that Kruger will give him a new identity as bouncer in a gay bar! However, Kruger does have need of his services later and Johnny C (and his mob friends) are a big part of the fun.
The plot really gets going when Deguerrin (James Caan), Kruger’s boss, puts him on another case involving munitions smuggling. A defense contractor is selling top secret high-tech weapons to the Russian Mafia. They have a witness, Lee Cullen (gorgeous Vanessa Williams), willing to testify. Kruger’s job is to keep her alive until she can!
We soon learn that there is a mole within WITSEC, and it’s Deguerrin himself! He is willing to kill all the witnesses they are protecting to get to Lee! Needless to say, there is action aplenty and improbable situations abounding in this film. Nonetheless, the characters, especially Arnie, carry it off with aplomb. Who else can jump out of a jetliner, sans parachute and live? Who can fight man eating crocodiles and live? Who can fight arch villains, get broken up, and still win? If you haven’t seen a Schwarzenegger film yet, get this one. It is one of his finest!
Kudos to the supporting cast, particularly villain Caan, victim Williams, and comic relief Pastorelli and mob associates! Cameo by James Coburn.
Remember, I said it's a mindless action flick; if you want something with literary value, go read War and Peace! "Eraser" is top of the line entertainment for its genre.
Viewers who enjoy "Eraser" will also want to see "Red Heat", "Total Recall", "True Lies", and the "Terminator", great action films featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
