Tom Hanks makes his bow as a writer and director with 1996's That Thing You Do!. It's about the rise and fall of a one-hit, mid-Sixties rock & roll band from Eerie, Pa., "a common tale," we're told. The titular chart-topper, sans exclamation point, is eminently believable as penned by Adam Schlesinger, and Hanks has cast the film well. The central figure is a replacement drummer (Tom Everett Scott) who reveres jazz while working in his father's appliance store. The other standout in the cast is the lead singer's girlfriend (Liv Tyler). It's awash in pop nostalgia, pretty pastels and period details (the latter most memorably). Workmanlike, but not without its charms. With Johnathon Schaech, Steve Zahn, Ethan Embry and Hanks. Cinematography by Tak Fujimoto.
