A lesbian mob flick... sounds like cheap, unwholesome entertainment, doesn't it? Well, IT'S NOT! It's better than most every mob flick ever made. This film contains both Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon's best performances to date. Joe Pantoliano and the rest of the supporting characters also play their respective roles to a T. On top of the wonderful acting, the story is about as perfect as I've ever seen.
The film opens with Caeser(Pantoliano), a mobster, and Violet(Tilly), his girlfriend, riding an elevator to their apartment and first meeting Corky(Gershon) on her way up to the apartment she's just moved into after getting out of prison. The two women exhibit an immediate attraction to each other in some of the most passionately acted scenes ever filmed. Soon, they invent a scheme to steal $2 million from Caeser and run off together to start a new life. From then on, as a caper film, this movie is perfection with plot twists in exactly the right places as the audience and each of the characters discovers details at different, and sometimes the same, time. The first time I watched the movie, I was on the edge of my seat from thirty minutes into the film until the end. Every time I've seen it since then, I've just smiled at how perfectly the whole film is executed.
Bound was written and directed by the Wachowski Brothers, who have since given us the visually stunning but uninteresting (at least for me!) film, The Matrix. Their directorial skills are superb in Bound however. This is one of those films that is directed with camera work unlike you have ever seen, and it is just a joy to watch!
Bound will certainly offend some audiences as it is profane and sometimes shocking, but it is worth the price of the rental. In fact, it's worth the price of the purchase as well.
Rated R for language, sexuality, violence, and some nudity
