I had to see "Waiting for Guffman" after every review I read said it was a great film. The reviews were right because I loved this movie.
This is the story of a Broadway director who moves to Blaine, Missouri in an effort to revitalize his career. He recruits a cast of characters with questionable talent to star in a play about the history of the town with the hope that Broadway will notice and invite him to return.
I guess part of the reason I loved this movie so much is because I was raised in small-town Missouri myself and I recognized the stereotypes.
The movie was dead-on when characters said things like, "We have a saying here in Missouri that if you don't like the weather, wait a minute and it will change." I also loved it when the movie the movie made references to the state football championship or towns like Jefferson City. The movie pokes fun at almost every small town stereotype from the high school band teacher to the smalltown businessman. The movie makes Missourians look like hicks, but it's funny to watch.
I recommend this movie to everyone, but this movie was made for Missourians.
