These "mock-documentaries" are always something I can enjoy. Before I saw "Waiting for Guffman", I caught "Drop Dead Gorgeous" on TV, which is also a mock-documentary. What makes these movies good for laughing-out-loud comedies is that they're totally true. The sad pathetic lives the characters lead is how a lot of people in their conditions live, making it mean to laugh at for some people, but for those who understand what comedy means and can deal with the "cruel intentions" these movies have as motives, "Waiting For Guffman" is a must see.
Christopher Guest was ultimately hilarious portraying an in-the-closet gay actor/director/producer, who creates a play for the town of Blaine that he hopes will make it to Broadway. Guest guides a cast of normal Blaine citizens into the world of acting, getting their hopes up by telling them a Mr. Guffman from New York will be appearing at their opening night to review their show, making them believe they just might be able to perform on Broadway. Each actor in this movie was beyond magnificent in portraying their character. This movie certainly made me die laughing due to its pathetic truth that so many of us will either deny or learn to deal with in a humorous way.
If you liked "Drop Dead Gorgeous" or "Spinal Top ", this movie is something you have to see. I really didn't expect to laugh as much as I did. The dialogue and how its acted out is superb. I could watch this movie over and over again, probably laughing more and more each time I watch it. Mock-documentaries are probably the best type of comedy I will ever see.
