Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Being a Harrison Ford fan, I try to catch every movie he has made whether in the theater, or on video/DVD. I had to FORCE myself to finish watching this film. It was horrible in my opinion. What drove Harrison to agree to take this script?
Basic Plot:
Harrison Ford is an Irish-American Police officer on the verge of retiring and lives happily with his wife and family in a little quaint section of NY. Ford has never fired his gun in his whole career and comes across as a wishy-washy, wimpy guy. (MADE ME SICK!!!)
Brad Pitt is an active, murdering member of the IRA, who is sent to live with Ford by a mutual friend who just happens to be an IRA sympathizer. Unbeknownst to Ford, Pitt has come to America to purchase missiles to wreak havoc on those who murdered his Father. He purchases a boat he plans on taking the missiles back in, and begins putting his plan into play.
Throw in a little action: Ford's home is broken into by mask wearing men kick the "tar" out of Ford and his wife. But Why??? In researching the invasion, he begins to find clues that Pitt is not who he appears to be. Ford eventually discovers Pitt's identity and is on a mission to stop him.
Overall Impression:
Sounds simple enough? It was just that, too simple. There were many flaws in the films itself as well.
*Ford mysteriously finds thousands of dollars in a hollow step that he didn't know was hollow in his own home??? COME ON!!!WHO PROOFED THIS FILM??? The next time you view it, watch the background scenes!
*One minute you see Pitt walking down a leaf covered street, then wham - next second there is green grass, and no leaves.
*Pitt does a great job on the Irish accent, but some scenes there are times you can't understand a word he is saying. You'll be surprised!!!
How did the main character do convincing me of who they were?
I did enjoy Pitt's performance, and felt that his character was completely explained, you understand his history, and made it easy for you to have sympathy for him, and somewhat excuse his behavior.
Ford, on the other hand, had NO explainable reason for being a spineless wimp. No reason to not be a MAN. Maybe I see Ford as the tough-guy that he portrayed in Patriot Games, or Witness. Maybe I'm type-casting him?
There is action, adventure, and a right vs wrong theme to this film. The tricky part is figuring out who you feel sorry "the most" for. The Betrayer, or the Betrayed.
I thought Six Days/Seven nights was bad, but this one blew that film away. What a black mark on Ford's career in my eyes. I'll never watch this film again on purpose!!!
