Us misplaced Irishmen have seen movies about the Old Country come and go, some fairly good ("The Crying Game"), some kinda bad ("A Prayer For The Dying"), and some horrid ("Patriot Games"). Convicted of duplicity in the latter, Harrison Ford repays us in spades with his solid performance (even though his character doesn't) in "The Devil's Own".
Just like Pitt points out throughout the flick, us returned empties have no real idea what's going on back in Ulster. We see the results of car bombs wiping out enemy armories, little kids hit in the face with plastic bullets, Irishwomen weeping futilely around martyrs' graves, and reports of activists' homes firebombed, 'getting what they deserve', and we change the channel and say, "What a rotten shame". We hope the Peace in Ulster lasts in Y2K, and that we be spared the vicarious sorrow of what happens in a place that is just a little closer to home than Uganda, or Kosovo, or even Colombia. Unfortunately the healing process has just begun, and we hope that there is little pain left for anyone to bear.
So we make Pitt the bad guy, Ford the good guy for keeping the guns from going overseas, and we got a pretty good suspense flick with a reasonable dash of pathos thrown in (feeling sorry for the Irish) as well as some romantic subplots (you don't think Pitt and Ford get off without some huggie-kissie?).
If that's all you see here, you're missing the point and the plot. Check your news archives and see how we got to Peace in Ulster in Y2K. After that, you can do some research about a situation in 1776 where some Irish rejects (along with a few other disrespected ethnic stereotypes) had a grievance with Mother England and had to pick up a few guns to make the peace in a different country.
History condemns the losers and condones the winners. Pick up "The Devil's Own" and see who's sorry now. Even if you don't appreciate the history or the politics, don't miss out on a helluva flick.
