Re: NR - for a valid reason. (Reply to this comment)

Before you accuse me of plagiarism, you should do your homework. I have written nearly a thousand film reviews, counting those published only in rec.arts.film.reviews
I am capable of writing my own reviews.

On the other hand, if someone has taken one of my reviews and is claiming it as their own, I would like to know.

if you had taken the time to format your text. This, I feel, is part of proofreading before you post.

Misses the point, of the film, of film in general ... (Reply to this comment)
by Oedipa_Maas
Insisting on "realism," "naturalism," "verisimilitude," whatever here is even more ludicrous than the physical, physiological, even just plain logical faux pas Brian correctly but beside-the-point notes here. Films construct their "realities," and some do indeed it more compellingly than others, despite of or in indifference to the experiences of everyday life. One could lecture here on the problems and problematics of any insistence on the cinema as a representational, realistic, naturalistic media in general, that leap of faith into seeing projected shadows on a screen already constituting quite the suspension of disbelief, one far more profound than buying into Woo's little ballistic ballets, but ... and I am curious to read the author's take then on, say, any given musical, science fiction, horror, or comedy film, for starters, but ... but the point is, this is first and foremost an action film, and a spectacular one at that. But even more so, it is that rarest of cinematic chimerae, an excellently made and superlatively acted action film. Brian's review, while perhaps written and argued as adequately as one might expect in the beargarden of internet armchair criticism, is, for an alleged "expert," revelatory of a profound misunderstanding of the cinematic. Sorry, but this naive take on "realism" is a sticking point for me, and the reason I chose to review Woo's film in the first place ...
