Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
A Smile Like Yours thinks it's a cute comedy about a couple trying to have a baby. But it's definitely not cute and there's far too little comedy. Mostly, it suffers because its main character is so unlikable, it's hard to feel any kind of sympathy for her.
Greg Kinnear and Lauren Holly play Danny and Jennifer, an almost sickeningly happily married couple. Greg's the hard-working architect. Jennifer also works, but always makes time to look and act like a perfect little wife. The only problem is that Jennifer's biological clock is ticking. And so, she goes completely nuts in her endeavor to become pregnant.
With precise timing, she 'surprises' her husband, no matter how awkward the timing or place. She uses self-created aphrodisiacs. She builds a nursery (another surprise to her husband who comes home wondering why his house is suddenly in a construction zone). Basically, Jennifer has only one purpose in life.
But it soon becomes obvious that there's something wrong - with at least one of them. So they end up at a clinic where they're convinced to try artificial insemination methods. Thus we're taken on the fertility roller coaster with them as they try, time and time again, to conceive.
One problem is that fertility difficulties are nothing to laugh at. Couples go through an enormous amount of stress, grief, and pain, not to mention expense, in their endeavor to conceive. It's simply not a subject worthy of comedic attempts, in my opinion. Not to say that this movie didn't try. It did. But the jokes mostly fell flat. For example, all of the gags revolving around Greg's "donations" have been done before, word for word, it seemed to me.
But the biggest problem is that I didn't like Jennifer at all. And as she carries most of the movie, it seems a shame to make her behavior so annoying. When she first starts working with the fertility process, she initially deceives her husband. Why? Well, she's simply not comfortable talking to him. I have news for you, Jennifer, if you can't talk to your husband about issues like fertility, then I don't think you're really ready to take on parenthood. Then she deceives him about a financial matter, for reasons that made absolutely no sense to me at all.
With all the deception going on, at one point, each of them suspects the other of cheating. There's no proof on either side. Yet do they talk about it? Nope, they just have their suspicions, and act on them. Basically, these two portray such an immature marriage, I simply couldn't root for them to conceive.
There are side plots, and a few minor characters, none of which make this movie any more enjoyable. Joan Cusack plays Lauren's friend and business partner. I guess some people find her enjoyable to watch; I do not. She added absolutely nothing to this movie. Jay Thomas plays Greg's friend and co-worker. Another role that added nothing. Jill Hennessy plays Greg's boss, who tries to seduce Greg on a business trip. This was an attempt to add a bit of excitement and suspense to the story, but the whole thing was so predictable from start to finish, it was all just a giant snooze-fest.
As far as performances go, the only one I actually liked was Jill Hennessy.
Overall, there's just not a whole lot to recommend this movie. Yes, there were a couple of touching scenes. And, yes, there were one or two jokes that were cute. But, really, you can skip this movie and not feel like you're missing a thing.
