rustyfanz's Full Review: Mortal Kombat - Annihilation
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
I absolutely hated this movie. To start, the plot line was horrible. Seriously...Liu won a tournament, so Earth is saved for 10 years, but Kahn "breaks the rules" and tries to destroy Earth anyway. Can you say lame? The Plot is by far the stupidest, most retarted thing that has ever been turned into a movie. (Oh wait, The Cat In The Hat is, my bad). Anyway, the plot is a deffinate "Fans ONLY" type of plot, with things in it such as the "Mortals Kombat" and "Gods" which are either never, or very shortly, explained.
Second, the acting sounds like something out of a 5th grade Christmas play. The sentences are choppy and often said by the "actors" with no enthusiam (or too much...or not at the right time). Very seldom does a line actually come out like it is supposed to. 95% of what Jax says is supposed to be funny, but only 5% of it actually comes out that way, the rest being either lame or just out of date stuff like one line "Man, I've known you for 10 seconds and you already dissin on me!?".
Third, the special effects are poorly made. One time, when Rayden is trying to get everyone out of harms way, right after he gets his "new look", there are sounds of lightning, and he makes his hands in the arch, but nothing is there. It was like they just forgot to add them. And the bridge that Sub Zero makes shortly after freezing that bad ninja dude, looks like cardboard or stirafoam. Hard, thick ice should NOT break like that!
Fourth, a lot of the fight sceens sucked. Almost every time when Sonya was tossed to the ground, it looked like she got half way there, stopped, then sort've just "fell". Only a few of the fights were actually worth re-watching.
Fifth, the special features on the disk blew...chunks. Biographies, 3-D computer models, sketches, set designs and theatrical trailer is all you get in this package. NO deleted sceens, NO outtakes, NO "making of"...nadda. It was almost sad that on the back, when it tells about all the "special features", it puts an exclimation mark behind each one.
Sixth, wtf is with having Sub Zero in the movie for a total of 5 minutes. He is by far, a character that most people recognize and place with the Mortal Kombat series. To not have him as a main character is almost a sin.
In ending, this movie is not even worth a rent. You could probably just read the script online somewhere...it would be more exciting and hell, everyone needs to read! Just take my word for it though, unless you are a fan, DO NOT even get interested in this DVD. If you saw a preview and thought "hey, that looks cool, and I always used to play Mortal Kombat at the arcades!" I REPEAT, DO NOT GET THIS DVD! Previews are meant to make the movie look good. If you saw an advertisement for poop cream, to put as icing on your cake, would you get it? Even if it made it look really good?... Thats what I thought.
