Clapton in great form with great sound
Written: Oct 08 '05
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I like Eric Clapton, and was pleased to find this concert on DVD from Netflix. They are a great source of concert movies! This is one I would buy.
The Concert: This was recorded (obviously) at London's Hyde Park in 1986. Eric Clapton sounded fantastic, and has a full band with him in this performance. This is a rock n roll / blues show, no acoustic stuff here (get his excellent Unplugged for that). Back up singers, a full horn section, and even a harmonica player showcase Clapton's awesome guitar playing with a nice fat big band sound. The show starts with a bang with his classic tune "Layla". He performs many of his classic tunes, including "Wonderful Tonight", "Have you ever loved a Woman", and "I shot the Sheriff". He also plays two Cream songs, "Badge" and "White Room". The rest of the concert was great blues songs. Eric Clapton was in fine form as was his band. The concert is about one and half hours long.
Video Quality / Choreography: The concert was done in 4:3 aspect ratio, and the video quality was VHS, not DVD. I would have preferred 16:9, and a much sharper picture since this was on DVD, but the video quality was passable, just rather soft with no sharp detail. The choreography was quite well done though, the camera man knew where to focus the cameras. There are plenty of shots focused on whoever is playing, including nice close ups of Claptons finger's on the fret board. The concert is balanced with whole stage shots and a few audience shots. Hyde park was full of people!
Sound Quality: The DVD offers three choices, Dolby Digital Surround, DTS surround, and PCM stereo. I listened to the concert in DTS, because that is my favorite. The sound quality of this concert is top notch! Guitar solos, vocals, horns, all sounded crystal clear against powerful drums, bass guitars and organs. (Sometimes improper mixing will drown vocals) The bass was clear and well defined, and the sound stage was well presented. The Front Left and Rights carry most of the information to create the sound stage, with the center channel for extra emphasis. The Surrounds are used for audience reactions, and a bit of echo you would expect in an outdoor arena. The surrounds are not distracting at all, they just give the DVD the ambiance of an outdoor concert. You can clearly pick out the placement of singers and instruments in all the mixes. I did listen to a few songs in Dolby Digital and PCM stereo for comparison. Dolby, the mix is the same, I just find the DTS mix to be slightly cleaner with a bit more punch. The stereo mix was actually quite good as well, you just don't get that "in" the audience effect.
Extras: There is a list of credits and lyrics, that's about it.
Review Equipment: DVD was played on a Pioneer Elite 47A with component outs for the video, and optical out for the audio. Amplification and processing was from a Yamaha AV 5280 100 w/ch surround sound receiver, except the front channels, which were amplified by a dedicated Rotel RB 991 200 w/ch stereo amplifier. Speakers were Polk Audio Monitor 70s Front Left and Right, and Polk Audio Csi40 Center, and R20s for surrounds. Subwoofer was a Velodyne SPL 1000 series II (1000 watts/2000 watt peak) with the crossover set at 80 Hz. Projection was from an Optoma H30 DLP projector onto a 105" Dalite Cinemavision movie screen.
Overall Opinion. The sound of this concert was fantastic, it put me right in it! If you are a Clapton fan, you should at least rent it, but I think this one is worth owning.
On a scale of 1-5, here's the breakdown:
Concert: 5 stars Audio 5 stars
Video Choreography 4 stars Video Quality 3 stars
Overall 4 stars
By the way, ignore the "movie rating" quick comments, this is a concert, not an action film!
Recommended: Yes
Viewing Format: DVD Video Occasion: Good for Groups Suitability For Children: Suitable for Children Age 13 and Older
