You say, "The plot is often confusing, there is an abundance of needless violence, and the characters have a cartoonish quality rather than depth."
The plot in "L.A. Confidential" is seamless, although you have to pay close attention. Needless violence? Although graphic and frequent, every scene is key to a motive or plot twist. Cartoonish characters? Complex characters is more like it, each has a mixture of admirable and reprehensible traits. Exley's
evolves and reveals his depth. (and, by the way, he is not loathed for "playing by the rules," but for his singular motivation of political expediency.
I suggest you view it again.....for the first time.
