Centering around a desperate British couple at the end of the 19th century, the two attempt to dupe a dying American heiress out of her millions. It is a very dark plot idea, but one that leads to a true exploration into depravity.
Though most period pieces tend to drag a little for me, I must say that the look of this movie and the themes that it explores makes it a fine film. First, the makers' use of camera filters makes everything in this movie so dark and lush. It's really quite gorgeous. Helena Bonham Carter as one of the greedy lovers adds to the beauty of the film, pale and distant, Carter's character never seems to find satisfaction in life. Her portrayal is strong and intriguing.
The various attempts to show the struggle innate in class relations provides the motivation for the characters. Whether they're poor and they desire wealth or if they're rich and they fear the world of poverty, the characters of this film are consumed by their greed. This leads them to so much emotional distance that they lose their ability to feel for one another. In one such scene, the British couple searching for a way to sustain their lifestyle attempt to make love but instead end up struggling naked in the bed over money. It is a tense moment to say the least.
The more depressing aspect of the film is the portrayal of the wealthy heiress. Her depiction as a young American woman full of exuberance for life, even in the face of her own imminent decline is juxtaposed to the jaded British couple scheming to claim her wealth for their own. Though I find this to be a tad melodramatic, it comes across realistically. What's worse is her decision to ignore their machinations, even after she learns the truth behind their motivations.
WINGS OF THE DOVE is an intense film, worthy of any raining evening. It is somewhat dreary, so be prepared to see a portrayal of humanity at its worst.
