Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Maybe you thought that the Spice Girls were all washed up, and forgotten about. Think again! They still have many fans out there, most of which are in hiding because they are now more of a guilty pleasure than a pop favorite.
Being a female singer, I'm always looking for songs and groups with very sing-able tunes, and of course interesting songs. When the Spice Girls came on the scene, I admit that I was hooked! Between the catchy tunes, good beat, and emphasis on harmonies and not on a single lead singer, I was an instant fan. I really discovered them when their hilarious movie, Spice World came to theaters. Several friends I know locally from an online chat environment (a MUCK, for those that know what that is), asked my husband and I to go with them to Sunset Blvd., and see it at the Cinerama Dome. It was quite an experience! We had not been there before, and had a great time in this huge theater.
As soon as I could, I purchased both CD's the Spice Girls had on the market, and have thoroughly enjoyed them ever since. Once the movie made it to home video, count me in on the fans that got it the first day. Now, at least 4 years later, I am still enjoying the movie whenever I watch it!
Ok, what is this movie all about then?
Quick refresher for some of you - The Spice Girls are:
Baby Spice - Emma
Scary Spice - Mel B.
Sporty Spice - Mel C.
Posh Spice - Victoria
Ginger Spice - Geri
This movie is a comedy, and rockumentary put together. The story has many various subplots going on, and portrays the girls as a group of friends that dream of making it big as singers, and obviously do! They are on a whirlwind of press stops, parties, practices, photo shoots, dance lessons, etc. All of this is in preparation for their first live concert on stage at Albert Hall in London, and broadcast around the world. As with all celebrities, they have a manager and assistant that takes care of all the business and schedules - and those two have a subplot of their own. Assisting them is their trusty bus driver, otherwise known outside this movie as the singer, Meatloaf. He has a great line where he says, "I love the girls, and I'd do anything for them. But I won't do that." If you did not get the joke, let me know and I'll fill you in! I missed it every time until very recently and have not stopped giggling since!
One of the more humanizing factors in this movie is the priorities that the girls portray in this movie. They have a good friend that was the sixth non-singing Spice Girl. She is pregnant and overdue when she is introduced. Of course, we find the girls taking her for a night on the town before their big concert, and their friend goes into labor. They must decide between being there for her or leaving to go to the concert on time.
The other major subplot has to do with the media. One part of this subplot is a group of 3 men making a documentary about the girls, led by Alan Cumming (Spy Kids, Josie and the Pussycats). The other part is even funnier, yet creepy in a way. As many people know, the paparazzi and tabloids in London are notorious for sniffing out and creating scandal for celebrities. When they can find nothing bad about the Spice Girls, they send in the King of all Paparazzi, played by Richard O'Brien (Rocky Horror). He does some pretty low, nasty things like sneaking into one of their rooms at night through the toilet. I do not even want to ask how he did it - just nasty! Remember, cartoon physics must be in play throughout this movie!! Through his 'skills' (if you can call them that), they are able to print headlines about the girls that are bits taken totally out of context and blown up to become scandalous.
Amongst all of this, there are two Hollywood writers pitching ideas to the girl's manager. They want to get the Spice Girls in a movie, and are willing to pull out all the stops and pitch every idea they can to get them in on the project. Of course, the last thing they pitch is a go, and it is the plot for the movie we just watched! With another ten minutes give or take left in the movie, the writer explains the rules for how the girls will be able to make it to their concert in time, putting their manager on the edge of his seat, praying that it comes true.
Will the girls make it to the concert? Will their friend have the baby alone? Will the bad guys see the error of their ways? Is this movie really going to be made? Find out when you watch this movie!!
My Recommendation
If you like movies filled with music, camp humor, and an all around good time (not to mention a bunch of Italian hunks at one point that wear clothes that leaving NOTHING to the imagination) - go rent this movie! I love to sing along, and if I was a pre-teen girl, I would totally by dancing along with much of it. I do not recommend following much of the fashion in this movie (although Sporty Spice's clothing is probably something many parents would like to see their teen girls wearing!). It is not an award-winning movie, but it is a fun movie that is one of my favorite guilty pleasures!
