Predictable, corny and a chick movie, but I love it. As soon as Robbie (Adam Sandler) and Julia (Drew Barrymore) meet you know that they are meant for each other.
The year is 1985 Van Halen is flying high and Pacers and Gremlin automobiles are still running strong.
Robbie Hart is the ‘Wedding Singer’. He has that nice boy next door personality. His parents died when he was in the third grade. From that time on, he has always wanted to get married and have a family of his own. At one time he had started a band, but the movie does not disclose why his band fell apart. Robbie is engaged to Linda (Angela Featherstone).
Julia also has that sweet girl next door personality. Julia moves to town to live with her cousin and to be closer to her fiance’ Glenn (Matthew Glave). Julia’s cousin Holly (Christine Taylor) gets her a job as a waitress at the weddings.
Robbie and Julia meet at (of course) a wedding. You can tell from the first meeting that these two belong together. The problem is that both are engaged to other people. Robbie is supposed to get married the very next weekend, but does he?
Robbie is standing in front of his friends and relatives waiting for his bride Linda. Guess what! Linda never shows up. She decides she is not in love with Robbie Hart the ‘Wedding Singer’. She is in love with Robbie Hart the lead singer of Final Warning.
Robbie becomes very depressed. He hates weddings. He spends days on end sleeping. Robbie’s best friend talks him into going back to work. This ends up being a big mistake. He comes to the wedding unshaven and his hair was all messed up. Robbie slams the guests and gets into a fight. Robbie tells Julia that he is a terrible wedding singer. Julia tells him that he is the best and asks him to be the singer at her wedding. He turns her down.
Robbie and Julia work together at a bar mitzvah. Julia talks Robbie into helping her plan her wedding. The two spend a lot of time together planning Julia’s wedding. They both realize that they have feelings for the other, but neither tell the other.
Julia’s cousin asks Julia to set her up on a date with Robbie. They decide to go on a double date. Julia can’t handle seeing Robbie with another girl, so she drinks until she gets sick. While Julia and Holly are in the bathroom Robbie sees Glenn eyeing the other women. Robbie questions Glenn a little and finds out that Glenn is cheating on Julia. What is worst is that he plans to continue to do it after they are married.
Robbie takes Holly home and she tries to get him to stay the night, but all Robbie could think about is Julia. Holly figures out that Robbie has feelings for Julia and that Robbie does not like Glenn. Holly tells Robbie that Julia is marrying Glenn because of his money.
Robbie goes to the city to find a job that would give him the money that he thinks Julia wants. When he returns Julia is at his house with a gift. They end up in a fight. Julia throws the gift up in the air and leaves.
Robbie goes to a bar. Robbie’s best friend shows up there and finds out that Robbie is in love with Julia. Sammy (Allen Covert) tells him to go talk to Julia. On his way to talk to her he sees her in her wedding dress. She looks so happy that he doesn’t want to disturb her. He goes back to the bar and gets very drunk.
As Robbie stumbles up his walkway Linda is waiting for him. She is there to tell him that she wants him back. Robbie passes out and Linda stays the night with him.
The next morning Julia shows up at Robbie’s house. She was there to tell Robbie that she loves him. Julia rings the bell and who should answer the door, but Linda. Julia asks to see Robbie, but Linda leads her to believe that Robbie and Linda are back together.
Julia goes to Glenn’s house and tells him that she wants to go to Las Vegas to get married that day. Glenn who didn’t want a big wedding in the beginning is very happy with the new wedding plan.
Robbie wakes up and is very surprised to see Linda there. When she tells him that she wants him back he tells her to get out.
Robbie is at a 50th wedding anniversary when he decides he has to tell Julia his feelings. As he is about to leave the party, Holly shows up and tells him about Julia coming over and Linda telling her that the two of them were back together. She also told him they were headed for Las Vegas.
Robbie gets to the airport and the only seat left was in first class. So Robbie is in first class and wouldn’t you know it Julia is in coach. Robbie tells the first class passengers about his quest to find Julia and to tell her how he feels. A stewardess comes to the first class and tells them about a passenger who wanted her to be a member of the mile high club with him. This passenger just happens to be Glenn. One of the first class passengers just happened to be Billy Idol. With the help of Billy, Robbie sings a song, which he wrote for Julia. Julia’s eyes lights up as she realizes that Robbie is singing and the song is for her. Julia’s smile gets even bigger as Robbie comes out of first class and starts to come her way.
Glenn is not happy and tries to get to Robbie, but again thanks to the stewards and Billy Idol Glenn is locked in the bathroom.
Robbie finishes his song. He tells Julia that the song is about her and that he loves her. Julia replies, “I am so in love with you.” They kiss and the next scene is them kissing after they get married. Happy ending.
I have watched this movie about 50 times. There are a lot of funny scenes that I did not talk about. It is well worth the time spent to watch this movie. I watch it whenever I am feeling down in the dumps or when I have a lot on my mind.
If you are looking for a movie with a happy ever after ending this is the movie for you.
