I already knew alot about that fateful night on the sea, so I was hoping for a story that would encapsulate the sinking, but grab my heart as well. As much as I like the two lead actors, Winslet and Dicaprio, I just didn't buy the love story between them. The reasons she didn't like her fiance are obvious and maybe should have been a little more subtle to give Kate some true acting to do. No woman with a brain in her head would want to stay with someone who treated her like a piece of property, no matter how much money he had. She desperately needed to escape, but come on. Leonardo may be charismatic and cute, but give up your whole life for him...I don't think so. They are both very attractive, but I felt they had no real sexual tension. Good friends sure. Lovers, not in a million years. I guess Leonardo is just too much of a boy for me.
The effects and look of the ship were fantastic, however, a film should never be about that. And as much as Cameron says the film isn't about the set design, when you spend that much money, it is. If he truly wanted to do a love story there are plenty of other, cheaper ways to do it. The terror of the final sequence, once the ship hits the iceberg, is mesmerizing and makes you wonder what you would've done in the same circumstances. It truly showcased some of the best and worst traits of the human race. The sinking of the ship was phenomenal, one-of-a-kind filmmaking. All those extras, all that water....wow.
Everything in this movie is extraordinary, from the acting to the real china plates. It
certainly didn't surpass my expectations, but it wasn't a complete waste of 3 hours either. Maybe if Cameron had concentrated more on the script then the set design, he would have gotten more award nominations for the screenplay and created a true love story that affected adults as well as 13-year-old girls. Great movie-going experience? Absolutely. Great story? Not so much. Oh well, you've got a sinking ship. What more do you need? Right?
