"City of Angels" has the dubious honor of being
the most boring film that I have seen in a long
time. Although some might consider the film to
be beautiful, I found it to be agonizingly slow.
The film is also a cheat, as the long awaited
romance is ended abruptly.
"City of Angels" is based on the 1987 German film
"Heaven Over Berlin" by Wim Wenders. Nicolas Cage
plays an angel who hangs out in the beaches and
libraries of Los Angeles, wearing a long black
trenchcoat. He is not alone, as there are dozens
of other angels, each as indolent and expressionless
as he is. Cage's best bud is Cassiel, with whom
he performs such good deeds as guiding the newly
dead to heaven, and waking up daydreaming air
traffic controllers.
While soliciting a new recruit for Heaven, Cage
encounters Meg Ryan, a heart surgeon troubled by
insomnia. Cage falls for Ryan and soon begins
stalking her. On of Ryan's patients is Dennis
Franz, a former angel who decided to go human.
He tells Cage how it's done, and now Cage must
decide whether his love for Ryan is strong enough
for him to join the living. Meanwhile, Ryan
must choose between the sluggish Cage and her
doctor boyfriend (Colm Feore).
Dennis Franz, as usual, gives a good performance.
His character, along with Feore's, manages to
escape the slumbering, somber tone of the film.
Unfortunately for Cage, Director Brad Silberling
has decided that angels have no emotions except
for empathy. Meg Ryan, whose charm is best suited
for comedies, seems miscast. Her usual spark is
missing, and her performance is almost as flat as
is the film itself. (31/100)
